The Treatment of Anxiety

Once anxiety has mutated from a perfectly healthy concern for
yourself and your interests into an all consuming way of life it is
important to effectively confront it. Anxiety Disorders arise when
the original stress factors are not suitably addressed and are
allowed to grow in influence over the sufferer. The Treatment of
Anxiety must first address the form and nature of the issue.

Anxiety can be broken down into composite forms such as General
Anxiety Disorder or Social Anxiety Disorder. More destructive, or
more ruinous forms, include Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Though everybody has heard of the
latter two, particularly PTSD with the current international
military situation, less is known about GAD and Social Anxiety
Disorder (commonly called Social Phobia to avoid confusion with Seasonal
Affective Disorder
). General consensus is that people suffering
from anxiety have nothing more than a ‘case of the willies’ or at
worst they need to ‘pull their socks up’. The current attitude to
anxiety disorders is similar to the way Alcohol Dependency used
to
be. Now that Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Dependency is more
in the public gaze, we can hope for a more measured and adult
approach to those among us that suffer needlessly.

The good news is that anxiety disorders can be resolved and
sufferers are able to recognise the ‘chinks in their armour’ with
the minimum of guidance, giving them the opportunity to handle
their stress and anxiety in the future.

Anxiety has been around as long as the human race, though in the
modern age we have what we perceive as more things to be anxious
about. Being late for work is stressful, but my Boss is unlikely to
hunt me for food! If Ethyl Alcohol
has been around for 9,000 years then anxiety is most certainly
older than that, people drink to relax right? Ancient cultures had
many ways to combat anxiety and the most effective are still in use
today, passed down through experience and as relevant now as
then.

By far the most effective Treatment of Anxiety is
personalised, face to face Therapy. Alcoholic Anxiety is fully
reversible and through a structured counselling process the causes
of your anxiety can be addressed and the skills needed to beat your
worries can be learned.

Anxiety treatment comes in two forms, Treatment of Anxiety
Symptoms and Treatment of Anxiety Causes. By far the most effective
approach is to confront the underlying causes. There are all manner
of different pills, tinctures and lotions around that ‘cure’
anxiety, but like Alcoholism unless the reasons are
addressed then the issue will constantly resurface.

The anxiety treatment program that Rehab Guide
recommends is one of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, MBCT.
This is a program of face to face counselling done in parallel to a
course of Mindfulness Meditation. The benefits of this are many.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, CBT, address the underlying causes
of the anxiety while Mindfulness acts as a barrier to the
symptoms.
