What is an Addict?
Simply put, an alcoholic or a drug addict is a person whose life is controlled by the use of alcohol or drugs. Some think of an addict only as the junkie in the alley who sticks a dirty needle in his arm. This misconception keeps many addicts from getting the help they need. In truth, drug addicts come from all walks of life and every part of society. There is no such thing as a typical addict. Many people begin their habit with prescription drugs obtained from well-meaning family doctors or social drinks with friends. Few intend to become addicts. Whether the habit comes from using alcohol, legal medications, or illegal substances such as crack cocaine, heroin, methamphetamines and marijuana, the consequences of addiction can be just as devastating and just as deadly.
