Alcohol Rehab Centres

For many people making a choice between alcohol rehab centres can be very difficult. For a layman, it is incredibly difficult to ascertain if an alcohol rehab centre, program or facility is effective and specific to your needs. So what are the components and ingredients of an alcohol rehab centre that makes it get the best results?

The “Ensuring Solutions to Alcohol Problems” was a research-based project at George Washington University Medical Centre. The researchers reviewed all the available research literature and consulted with various professionals in the alcohol treatment and alcohol rehabilitation industry to identify the active ingredients of effective alcohol rehab centres.

These were identified as:

Early detection, including screening and what practitioners call brief interventions. These brief interventions were (for non-dependent problem drinkers). It was concluded that the earlier the treatment for alcohol issues and drinking problems begins, the better the outcomes and chance for success.

Comprehensive Assessment and individualised person-centred treatment plan. Treatment for alcohol issues and drug misuse is by no means a one-size-fits-all situation. In fact, it is clear that not all individuals require the “acute care” approach, which is the industry standard. Your choice of alcohol rehab centre should reflect this way of working.

Care management. Most alcohol rehab centres carefully manage you or your loved ones care every step of the way, and this can include involving family members and friends of the individual who is being treated being involved in their care plans. This care management should start at the initial assessment and be carried through to continued follow-up after the alcohol rehab program ends.

Individually delivered, proven professional interventions. There are several interventions, based on different treatment theories and philosophies that can be effective in reducing and stopping alcohol consumption depending on the patient’s sex, the level of dependence and the willingness or motivation of the individual to change. Effective alcohol rehab centres will always offer more than one approach, as this is essential to the care being person-centred.

Contracting with patients. This is also called contingency management or in some cases, behaviour contracting. Basically, it works by contracting with patients in the alcohol rehab centres to reward good behaviour and to put sanctions on what the rehab centre deems inappropriate behaviour. This contracting approach has been shown to improve treatment outcomes.

Social skills training. The basis for cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is that people with alcohol problems can be taught to recognise stressful situations and where their own personal triggers may be. Thus enabling and helping to identify where the patients drinking has been a problem in the past and teaching how to develop the skills to cope with those situations in the future, once their treatment in the alcohol rehab centres has ended.

Medications. Although it is at times necessary to use medication when detoxing someone from alcohol, your alcohol rehab centre will make clear that medical treatments cannot “cure” drinking problems. Medication can be used initially and is usually combined with other interventions and therapies to produce alcohol treatment that is effective.

Specialised services for medical, psychiatric, employment or family problems, all these issues will be addressed in the initial care planning and assessment process on a good alcohol rehab centre. It is essential that the alcohol rehab centres treatment programs need to be targeted at the individual needs of the patient through what the experts call “problem-to-service matching.”

Continuing care. For the most part, those who enter an alcohol treatment centre have at least one relapse. It is vital that any facility you choose for you or your loved one has a follow-up contact protocol, as well as participation in support groups, as these have both been shown to improve long-term treatment outcomes and to help maintain the patient’s sobriety.

Strong bond with therapist or counsellor. The best evidence-based research has shown that counsellors and therapists in alcohol rehab centres, who bond with patients primarily through empathy, rather than confrontation, are a distinctive and powerful motivating influence in the patient’s journey through alcohol treatment.

Longer duration (for alcohol-dependent drinkers). It has also been shown that for those who are indeed alcohol-dependent that how long the patient stays in alcohol rehab centre matters. In particular, if a patient is treated in an inpatient or outpatient setting. Studies indicate that outpatient treatment lasting less than 90 days results in poorer outcomes and an inpatient programme lasting 28 days or more also has superior results.

Participation in support groups. Project MATCH and other studies in the 1990s definitively proved that participation in support groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, is an active ingredient of treatment– both during a professional intervention and after. So introduction and attendance at AA or NA meetings should be facilitated in any alcohol rehab centre you or your loved one attend.

Strong patient motivation. It is common knowledge and research evidence that all approaches to alcoholism recovery depend on the desire of the person to get well and to remain sober. The best alcohol rehab centres will enhance this motivation with intervention and therapy.
